The best-known film set, however, remains the one for The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) where Roger Moore played James Bond opposite Christopher Lee and Britt Ekland. The most recent, Mechanic: Resurrection (2016) starring Jason Statham and Jessica Alba, gives plenty of screen time to Yao Yai’s beautiful Laem Haad Beach. The marine Eden of Phang Nga Bay has featured in several Hollywood movies. The sandy tombolo beach of Phakbia Island is perfect for a picnic as well as snorkelling, then cruising on to the rainforest bat colony at Koh Roi and the dramatic coral pinnacles of Koh Ku Du. The only other people there might be a few Scandinavians just arrived from the snowy north who can’t quite believe the warmth of the sea and air. To see multiple islands, join a daytrip excursion that takes in little gems like Koh Lao Lading with its sandy cove that’s shaded by cliffs and bamboo. The best times to visit here are at low tide or sunset - and better still if they both coincide. ![]() The population, around 18,000 people in all, is predominantly Muslim so there’s much less booze and bikini culture than on other Thai resort islands.įrom Koh Yao Noi it’s just a short trip across the channel to the brilliant sandspit of Laem Haad Beach on the southern tip of Yao Yai. To get around you can use the local pick-up truck taxis, a bicycle or rental motor scooter. The east coasts generally offer the best views of those mystical islands, as well as having better beaches than the mangrove shorelines elsewhere on the islands. Fishing villages and small resorts are scattered around the coast, along with coconut and rubber plantations. There’s even a 7-11 on Yao Noi - but just one. As the largest islands in Phang Nga Bay the Koh Yaos have restaurants, internet and phone connections and the occasional ATM. Visiting these tropical twins doesn’t mean a Castaway re-enactment. ![]() From either one you can gaze across the vast blue moat of Phang Nga Bay to the gothic limestone islands that rise like the towers of a drowned Camelot. Koh Yao means literally “island long”, with Koh Yao Noi - Small Long Island - having better visitor facilities than its larger sibling to the south, Koh Yao Yai - Big Long Island. Instead, this pair of long, forested islands boast a handful of quality resorts and face one of the most beautiful bays in the world. S itting pretty midway between Phuket and Krabi, the Koh Yao islands still run on slow-boat time and are quite content, thank you very much, with their lack of beer bars, spas and over-tourism. ![]()
